CICA

Centre for Clinical Implementation of Capsule Endoscopy

CICA is an Excellence Centre under the Region of Southern Denmark, established by Department of Surgery A at Odense University Hospital (OUH) in Svendborg. The project has now concluded, but the research continues under the SATC·C.

CICA is dedicated to expanding standard practices for intestinal examinations using capsule endoscopy, focusing on daily clinical practice across multiple medical disciplines and bridging the gap between hospitals and primary care.

The centre aim to establish a strong scientific foundation for the implementation of capsule endoscopy, addressing clinical, technical, and organizational aspects.

It is unique in its multidisciplinary approach, conducting research that integrated expertise from various fields to enhance patient care.

Final Report – CICA

Publications CICA

CICA’s research and
development efforts are centered around:

Capsule endoscopy in colorectal cancer screening

Capsule endoscopy for diagnosis, monitoring, and follow-up

Business and service models for capsule endoscopy

Artificial intelligence as a decision support tool

Hardware development for real-time diagnostics

Capsule endoscopy as a filter test in primary care

Breaking ground

By combining clinical and technical research across different medical specialties, CICA was at the forefront of advancing capsule endoscopy—also known as minimally invasive intestinal examinations using ingestible camera pills.

The centre’s work supported the broader adoption of capsule endoscopy in both specialist and primary care settings, offering a less invasive and more efficient alternative to traditional intestinal examinations.

Although the CICA project has officially ended, its research and innovation continue under the SATC·C, ensuring further advancements in capsule endoscopy and related technologies.
