Since 2019 clinical teams in Denmark and Scotland have worked on establishing strong research units around the use of colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) for diagnosing colorectal cancer. Parallel to local implementation and research projects, the teams at Odense University Hospital, Denmark, and in the NHS Highland region of Scotland have developed a close relationship focused on sharing knowledge and research findings as well as joining forces on international clinical research.
Since May 2020 the partnership has been supported by a Twinning project funded by Digital Health Europe under the Horizon2020 programme of the European Union.
The main purpose of the Twinning project has been to establish a joint research infrastructure where clinical CCE data from both countries can be shared and used for joint research publications to promote use of CCE in clinical settings to develop better diagnostics of colorectal cancer.
CCE images are also a good way to apply clinical artificial intelligence to analyse the data as AI can be trained to look for abnormalities on the collected images. For this reason, the partnership also includes researchers from the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute at the University of Southern Denmark who are experts in this area.
